First Presbyterian and Friends Donate 28 CYFD Backpacks
On May 2, First Presbyterian Church members and friends donated 28 filled backpacks to the local Children, Youth and Family Department (CYFD) for their "Pull Together" program. The backpacks are given to children when CYFD has to put them in foster care. The backpacks are filled with age appropriate items ranging from sippy cups to stuffed animals, to throw blankets, to coloring books and crayons and coloring pens, to Nerf or stress balls, to personal diaries. Barbara notes this project is one of several projects First Presbyterian's members have undertaken that fit under the church's mission which is to help where the needs of children and the problems of poverty
intersect."This has been an amazing project for our church," says Barbara Nelson, project coordinator. "We encouraged our congregation members to pull together and create seven filled backpacks, instead they donated enough items and backpacks to create 23 of them. Then we contacted the various community groups who use our church building, asking if they would like to join us in this project. Those groups donated an additional five backpacks."
